Will this fit your machine?

You need 10 to 25 GPM. GPM means gallons per minute — how much hydraulic fluid your machine can push out. Standard flow is enough. This mixer uses a gear motor and doesn't ask much of your hydraulics — it's built to turn slowly.

• Bobcat T740, 23 GPM standard: Yes.
• Kubota SVL75-3, 19.2 GPM standard: Yes.
• CAT 259D3, 20.0 GPM standard: Yes.

Case drain: not needed. A case drain is an extra hydraulic line some attachments use to send leaked fluid back to the tank. This one uses a gear motor, so it skips that step.

What happens if you get the flow wrong

Too little flow, and the drum turns slower than it should — you'll get an uneven mix and it'll take longer than you planned. Too much flow, without switching down out of high-flow mode, spins the gear motor faster than it's built for. That's heat and wear, the same as running any gear motor too fast — not a faster mix, just a shorter motor life.

The one number that catches people out

Wet concrete weighs about 4,000 lb per cubic yard. A half-yard mixer, filled all the way, carries roughly 2,000 lb of concrete on top of a 900 lb bucket.

Do this math on your own machine before you order. You need your machine's ROC — that stands for Rated Operating Capacity, the weight your loader is actually rated to lift and carry safely.

• Bobcat T740: 3,200 lb ROC, minus the 900 lb bucket, leaves 2,300 lb. That's enough for a full half-yard, with room to spare.
• CAT 259D3: 2,010 lb ROC, minus 900 lb, leaves 1,110 lb — the tightest margin of any machine we've checked (see the CAT 259D3 guide). That's only about 0.28 cubic yards — just over half the drum. Fill it about halfway and stop.
• Kubota SVL75-3: 2,490 lb ROC, minus 900 lb, leaves 1,590 lb. Careful — that's only about 0.40 cubic yards. Run it three-quarters full and you'll be fine.

The capacity written on the mixer measures volume, not what your loader can actually lift. Most sellers don't do this subtraction for you — we did.

Where to find your ROC number

Check your machine's data plate — usually near the operator's seat or stamped on the lift arm — or your operator's manual, under "rated operating capacity" or "lift capacity." If you can't find it, look up your exact model on the manufacturer's website, or call your dealer with your serial number.

Why buy one at all

You mix concrete on site and pour it right where you're standing, instead of paying for a small truck delivery and standby time. For footings, posts, pads, and repair work, the ready-mix truck's minimum order charge is usually the reason this attachment exists.

Don't buy this one if

• You're pouring more than a couple of yards at once. Order a truck instead. You'll spend the whole day mixing small batches, and the pour will end up with weak seams called cold joints, where old and new concrete don't bond well.
• You have no water on site. This isn't a small detail — mixing needs water, and hauling enough of it is most of the work people don't plan for.
• You won't rinse it out right away. Concrete hardens inside the drum. Leave it once, and you'll be chipping it out with a hammer.
