Will this fit your machine?

Probably not — and we'd rather tell you that now than after you've spent the money.

You need 30 to 45 GPM and a case drain line. GPM means gallons per minute — how much hydraulic fluid your machine can push out. A case drain is an extra hydraulic line that sends leaked fluid straight back to the tank instead of through the normal return line. This flow number rules out most machines with standard flow. This is the most demanding attachment we sell.

Check your machine, honestly

• Bobcat T740, standard flow (23 GPM): No. Not close.
• Bobcat T740, high flow (30.5 GPM): Careful — that's the very bottom of the range. It will cut, but slowly, and it will run hot.
• Bobcat T770, high flow (36.6 GPM): Yes.
• Kubota SVL75-3, standard flow: No.
• Bobcat T870, high flow (36.6 GPM): Yes.
• CAT 299D2 XHP, high flow (40 GPM): Yes — this machine has room to spare here.

Look at the actual number on your machine's plate, not the words in the brochure. The term "high flow" alone can mean anywhere from 26.9 to 45 GPM, depending on the maker. Those words won't tell you if you're at 27 or 45. On this attachment, that gap is the whole decision.

Running under 30 GPM doesn't just mean "slower." The cutting disc never reaches real cutting speed, so it rubs and grinds instead of chopping cleanly. Your hydraulic pump works flat out the whole time even though the disc isn't spinning fast enough — that effort shows up as heat in the oil, not as cut material on the ground.

The money question, since this is the expensive one

Mulching contractors charge $2,500 to $4,500 a day for this work. That's why this attachment costs what it does. If you're only clearing your own land a few times a year, renting is the honest answer, and we'll tell you that before you spend the money.

If you're billing for full days of work, this pays for itself fast. It also qualifies for Section 179, a tax rule that lets you deduct the full purchase price in the same year you start using it.

How to check for a case drain port

Look at the coupler block on your loader arm. The two big lines — the ones with flat-faced fittings — are your supply and return. Those run the mulcher itself. A case drain is a third line, smaller than the other two, that runs straight back to the tank instead of through the valve. If your machine only has two ports there, you don't have a case drain. It's not something you can add with a fitting — it has to be plumbed from the machine's hydraulic system.

Case drain is not optional

This attachment runs a piston motor, and a piston motor must have a case drain line. Run one without it and trapped pressure destroys the seals. That failure usually gets blamed on the operator, not the missing hookup. If your machine has no case drain port, do not order this.

Don't buy this one if

• You're under 30 GPM. There's no workaround and no adapter for that. Your machine's flow is the hard limit.
• You only clear land a few days a year. Rent instead. The cost only makes sense with regular use.
• You want to move what you cut. A mulcher chews material up and leaves it in place. You'll also need a grapple to move it.
