Will this fit your machine?

You need 18 to 35 GPM and a case drain line. GPM means gallons per minute — how much hydraulic fluid your machine can push out. A case drain is an extra hydraulic line that sends leaked fluid straight back to the tank. Stump grinders get mismatched to machines more than anything else we sell. This range crosses both standard flow and high flow, and the brochure words alone won't tell you which side you're on.

The trap that costs people a motor

One manufacturer sells two different stump grinders and labels both of them "High Flow." One needs 26.9 GPM. The other needs 45 GPM. Same two words on the label, an 18 GPM difference underneath them.

We checked 15 machines. "High flow" meant anywhere from 26.9 to 45 GPM, across six different labeling systems. That's why we always quote you a number, not a category name.

Check your machine

• Bobcat T740: 23 GPM standard flow — yes. 30.5 GPM high flow — yes.
• Bobcat T770, high flow (36.6 GPM): Careful — that's 1.6 GPM over our 35 GPM ceiling. Run it in standard-flow mode, or email us and we'll quote you the high-flow model instead.
• Kubota SVL75-3, standard flow (19.2 GPM): Yes.
• CAT 259D3, standard flow (20.0 GPM): Yes.

How to check for a case drain port

Look at the hydraulic couplers on your loader arm. The two main lines — the ones with flat-faced fittings — are your supply and return. A case drain is a third, smaller line that runs straight back to the tank instead of through those two. If you only see two ports, you don't have one. It has to come from the machine's hydraulics; you can't bolt one on afterward.

Case drain is mandatory here

This grinder runs a piston motor, and a piston motor must have a case drain line — it is not optional. Whether an attachment needs a case drain depends on the type of motor inside it, not on what kind of attachment it is. Run a piston motor with no case drain and trapped pressure destroys the seals, usually within a season. If your machine has no case drain port, tell us before you order.

The same logic runs the other way on flow, too. Spinning a piston motor faster than it's rated for doesn't grind stumps any quicker — it just builds heat and wears out bearings and seals well before their time. That's why the T770 above gets run in standard-flow mode instead of full high-flow.

Don't buy this one if

• You've got one stump to grind. Rent one instead. This attachment pays for itself over dozens of stumps, not one afternoon.
• Your machine's flow is under 18 GPM. It will still turn, but slowly, and you'll cook the motor doing it.
• You're grinding in rocky ground. The teeth wear out and need replacing, and rock wears them three times faster. Budget for spare teeth from day one.

When the teeth wear out

We sell replacement carbide teeth separately, sized to fit this grinder. If you're working rocky ground, order a spare set with your first purchase — losing a day to a parts order costs more than the teeth do.
